All,
Dr. Cahill went over Silver Minted this morning and gave her a thorough acupuncture treatment. The verdict? “I found nothing out of order – nothing that was not in keeping with what I nearly always find with a horse at this stage of training. Go right on with her as planned.” He also said it’s ‘great therapy’ for her to be turned out for 18 hours every day. “You’re solidly on the right track with your filly. I like her a lot.” This from one of the most direct and truthful people I’ve ever known. Chris indicated that he likes to leave a three day gap between this treatment and a work. She’s scheduled to work on Saturday.
I’ll see Joe Orseno in the morning and I’ll have a Flirty Report later tomorrow afternoon.
Best!

All,
Flirty had a good first day at the race track!
She walked onto the track back at the chute and behind the starting gate, where the rider jogged her a bit to sort of ‘feel her out.’ Then she walked out on the main track, jogged to the 5/8ths pole and broke into a strong gallop which she maintained for one full turn around Gulfstream Park’s 1 1/8th mile oval. She walked back off the track calmly, cooled out well, and when I left she was chillin’ in the stall. No sign of any breathing problem.
As she was walking off the track Joe Orseno asked the rider how she behaved. The rider said, “She was green. She propped a bit in the chute, she looked around a lot during the gallop and tried to prop in both turns. Very green.” As rider and horse moved out of earshot, Joe looked at me and said, “Perfect. He’s my most finicky rider and if that’s all he had to say, she did great!”
It was 35-degrees at 7AM – very, very cold for Miami. The people hate it. The horses love it!
On another front, Silver galloped strongly this AM, showing no signs of wear or distress from yesterday’s acupuncture treatment. She’ll work a quarter on Saturday.
Pictures to follow!
Best,
Paul

All,
Due to expected bad weather tomorrow (it might snow in Ocala!!!) we decided to move Silver Minted’s “work” up a day. She jogged a half, then galloped a mile before “working” a soft quarter, which she did with ease. She went each of two eighths in 13.3 for a quarter in 27.1 which is plenty fast enough for the time being and for track conditions. For now her times are relatively meaningless because she’s just easing back into a higher level of training. We’ll know a lot more when she works her first good 5/8ths. I wasn’t there, but Andy said she looked great and she came off the track nearly cooled out. “It’s all good, Randy!”
I don’t believe I’ve mentioned it, but ‘Silver’ is what I call a ‘glider.’ She’s very light on her feet, so much so that when she comes by her hoofbeats seem almost inaudible, as if she’s moving on little cat’s feet. I know that race horses will fool you, but if she’s not a turf horse I’ll be the most surprised guy in the place. Long on the grass, I say! I hope I’m right ‘cause there’s nothing more fun than a nice turf horse, and especially a filly!
I spoke with Joe Orseno earlier today. Flirty is galloping with a Forestry filly (stud fee, $25,000) and Joe said, “Flirty knows more than this Forestry filly who’s been in training for nine months!” I’m not sure what that means ‘cause this isn’t an IQ test, but…. Anyway, Joe said he’s going to give the two fillies a soft quarter, out 3/8ths tomorrow morning, just to see how they do. “I hope they can go in .40,” said Joe.
I’m certain that Joe is a bit skeptical re: Flirty’s condition. I told him she’s much more fit than he thinks - that she’s half-mile fit - but I guess to one degree or another he’s dead set on finding this out for himself. He’ll call me after tomorrow’s ‘event,’ and if he doesn’t say something to the effect that ‘she’s more fit than I thought,’ I’ll be shocked. When I was at Gulfstream on Wednesday morning I told Joe to just go right on with her. He promised me that he would and he’s always been a man of his word.
I’ll be in Ocala tomorrow morning weather or no. I need my regular horse fix!
That’s it for now. More sooner.

This notice is to inform you that one or more of your horses has worked out.
Mirthful Flirt Date: January 9, 2010 Track: GULFSTREAM PARK Distance: Three Furlongs Time: 39:80 Breezing Track Condition: Muddy Surface: Dirt Rank: 5/6″
My Response:
David,
In a conversation yesterday, Joe told me he was going to send her out with another filly to let them go a quarter and ‘stretch their legs’ out to 3/8ths. I guess he identified the horses to the clockers, so we now have a ‘work’ on the tab. Well – sort of a work.
Based on what Joe told me yesterday I’d call this a non-event. However, muddy or not, If that’s all the faster she can go – YOICKS! We’ll find out more in the next couple weeks.
On another note, Silver came out of her work fine
Paul
